Planning: Trailers

The Team

Our Target Audience?

We decided that our target audience would be teenagers as the teen audience are the highest group of movie watchers. We decided on this because the majority of people that view British Social Realism films are of this age.

"Young people aged 15 to 24 are the most likely age group to go to the cinema. In 2002,50 per cent of this age group reported that they went to the cinema once a month or more in Great Britain, compared with 17 per cent of those aged 35 and over. "

Life Change Events

As group, we collaborated to come up with six different life events that we had experienced in our own lives which we could then use as some original ideas for storylines. Around each postcard we added emotions which we associated with each event. By portraying different emotions within the trailer, hopefully the audience will be able to connect with our characters.

POSSIBLE STORY LINES

Using the life events task as well the inspiration from UK newspapers, as a group we came up with a spider diagram of ideas for different storylines we thought would be engaging for a range of different audiences who would see the trailer, but specifically our target audience. The storylines we came up with are a mix of those often found in British Social Realism films as well as some different ideas that we thought we fairly original.

LOCATIONS

This is the bedroom we will be using to film the shots where James speaks to Georgia on the music forum. We plan to make the room messy by not making the bed, and leaving clothes etc lying around; this would create a sense of a typical working class bedroom.

This is Park Hall Academy, where we plan to film our shots where James is inside school. The interior of the school is quite bland with the main colour being white, this contrasts to the extravagance we will find in the Royal Academy at a later date. The school is located in a majority working class area, so it would suit our social realism theme.

Birmingham is Jame's home town, and is known for being a big city with mainly working class citizens. We will film the scenes here in the more run down areas so as we can get across the feel of James being a working class teenager. There will be a brief part in the trailer where we establish this town as his home town, but we quickly move on.

After James gets the train from Birmingham, we show him in London. We plan to show a montage of landmarks to contrast with how different London is from Birmingham, where James is used to living. We will show him being overwhelmed by this big change, as London is known as the city of opportunity in England, where people go to catch their big breaks.

We chose the Royal Academy of Music as the university James would try for as it is very posh, something he would not be used to. It would have the shock factor for the audience, and they would sympathise with him and want him to do well. It would also be a high point in his life, marking the success he has achieved mainly by    himself.

WHO ARE OUR DISTRIBUTORS?

We have decided BBC FILMS will distribute/finance our film, as they distributed BILLY ELLIOT which is the main influence behind our film. They themselves describe them as "at the forefront of British independent film-making" showing they have alot of experiance distributing social realism films, which is a priority for launching our film to the general public. Their input helped BILLY ELLIOT win three major British Academy Film Awards; it is this sort of company we want involved in our project.

We have also decided to release out production with OPTIUMUM RELEASING, as they contrubuted majorly with the release of both BILLY ELLIOT and SUBMARINE, both of which heavily influence our production. We decided upon this as they distribute many social realism films, and the company is British, based in London. They release independent British, Irish and American films in the UK and sometimes Ireland, through Optimum Releasing under the strand 'Optimum Classic'.
In September 2011, the company was renamed StudioCanal UK.

2011 has seen the company enjoy its biggest ever box office returns in the UK. STUDIOCANAL Home Entertainment has quickly become one of the leading distributors in the UK and is consistently ranked amongst the top ten UK distributors.

PLOT OVERVIEW

TIME MANAGMENT
This is our opportune filming days for the next few weeks. We intend to travel and film in London on the 3rd of Febuary.

We have aranged to get the train to London, and intending on getting there early enough to film all the shots we can within one day, due to the limited daylight. We aranged to finish bbefore 3pm, as the daylight changes may affect the footage. We therefore need to arrive at London before 12, to give us enough time to travel to the locations and film each shot multiple time.
