The Application of Propp's Character Types in Fishtank and Bulletboy
Why do people go to the Cinema?
One of the main reasons someone may watch a British Social Realism film is that they identify with a character or their situation or for surveillance. This is because it's easy for the audience to consciously or unconsciously relate to the characters.
Blulmer and Katz say there are 4 reasons why someone consumes a media text, including visiting the cinema:
Diversion: To escape the routine or as a means of entertainment
Socialisation: To discuss with others (friends, family, classmates etc)
Surveillance: To be educated or to find out information
Identification: If you admire a certain actor/actress wanting to like a character in the film

The most popular time for people to visit the cinema is June and August and the worst month to release a film would be in June as the least amount of people visit the cinema during this month. Howeverreleasing a British Social Realism in June may be more profitable than in July as it would have less competition.

The Representation of the Modern British Working Class, and How it Can be Portrayed Through the Media
Theorists of Mediation and the Representation of Reality within the TV
The Story of Shannon Mathews in the eyes of the media; The abduction of the girl 'Madeline McCann, swamped the media for months after her disappearance, however, there was a huge level of neglect to the story of Shannon Mathews, and her disappearance. One particular critic claimed that the social class of both children played a major role; As Madeline came from a middle class background, the media swarmed around the story, whereas Shannon came from a Working Class family, and therefore only received 1/3rd of the media coverage that Madeline achieved. It is this difference in class that is believed to be the main reason for the 'popularity' amongst the media.
However, there was a sudden change when the finding of Shannon was broadcasted, and shortly, media coverage seemed to show a little bit more attention, but it wasn’t until the truth of the girl’s disappearance was unfolded. It was revealed that Shannon was abducted by her own mother, whose intent was to claim the reward for herself. News stories surrounded the story, and before long, the entire working class population was victimised, and represented in a way which matched that of the abusive behaviour of Shannon’s mother. It was portrayed that most of the British working class population had the same characteristics of the people within the story of Shannon Mathews, which then set out an assumption for the majority of British people, that people from a working class background are abusive, ‘inhuman’ and filled with neglect.

Blumer and Katz also suggest four different ways a film (and subsequently the trailer) may appeal to a particular target audience in their 'Uses and Gratifications Model.':
Diversion: Suggesting the movie 'Sket' is aimed at youths between the ages of 15-24, the film may be seen as a simple 'diversion' for the target audience; they may go to see the film at the cinema just for a simple means of entertainment perhaps to relax after /temporarily forget about stressful periods of study.
Socialisation: The target audience may go to see 'Sket' so they can discuss it with their peers who are also likely to have seen the film as they are also of the target audience.
Survelliance: Youths of the target audience may be interested in learning more about violence and gangs (a strong feature in the 'Sket' trailer).
Identification: The target audience for 'Sket' is likely to be able to identify with the film in a number of different ways, for example a certain actor/actress (although unknown actors are usually hired for movies of this genre) or they may be able to identify and relate to the storyline and the issues that are apparent in the trailer.
Here we looked into different ages groups within our local area to assess what people watch and where. From using simple questionaires, we came up with these results.
